Monarto Zoological Park Carnivore Restaurant

Phillips/Pilkington designed a restaurant and viewing platform for Monarto Zoological Park that gives panoramic views of the lion enclosure. The building is bisected by the enclosure fence, with the restaurant’s seating area on the ground floor, ‘inside’ the enclosure. The upper level acts as a viewing platform and function area, which can be freely accessed while the restaurant is in use below. The building’s curvaceous form mimics the gentle undulations of the mallee landscape and provides generous shading both for humans and to encourage the lions to shelter close to the building.
