MONARTO, SA

Since 2004, a variety of animal interaction and observation structures have been designed and built to accommodate significantly increased visitor numbers at Monarto Zoo. These structures enhance the visitor experience by providing close-up wild animal encounters and complementing the beautiful Mallee landscape. An important design consideration was that the Monarto Zoo staff were going to erect these structures themselves, and had a large number of glavanised steel components left over from a previous project. These formed the basis for the design solution and were combined into a boardwalk cross-section with a sloping balustrade and structural column geometry. This design has provided Monarto Zoo with a distinctive family of suitable structures which have been used successfully at four different locations.
