Woodcroft College
Gymnasium, Adelaide,
2003- 2005
After designing the Woodcroft College Master Plan, Phillips/Pilkington Architects completed stage 1 of the development, which included a new gymnasium. The building houses the offices for the Physical Education staff, a foyer, meeting area, male and female change areas and extensive storage facilities. The main hall houses an international Olympic standard basketball/ volleyball/ netball court and has the flexibility to be divisible and run 2 classes simultaneously.
The design aims to make the most of natural daylight through innovative material choices. The result is a building that operates without artificial lighting used in daylight hours, significantly reducing ongoing operating costs. Natural ventilation is also provided to the gym by a series of mechanical louvres integrated into the distinctive sloping wall panels.
This project won an Award of Merit from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (SA chapter)
