Living Kaurna Cultural Centre, 1998 -2000
Designed in association with Habitable Places Architects, the Living Kaurna Culture Centre provides facilities for the Kaurna community in the City of Marion. A reconciliation, landmark, tourism and heritage project, the design is based on the story of Tjilbruke and has been developed collaboratively with the Kaurna people. The centre provides a meeting/activity room, interpretive gallery, catering and kitchen facilities together with outdoor decks. The building employs environmental strategies including natural ventilation and shading, rainwater collection, evaporative air-conditioning and use of naturally resilient timbers such as ironbark and cyprus pine.
This project won an Award of Merit from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (SA chapter) and an Australian Timber Design Award. |
