Innes National Park Visitor Centre, 1996 -1998

The commission of the new Park Headquarters at Innes National Park resulted from a design competition, won by Phillips/Pilkington Architects. The building has been designed to provide a functional working environment for National park staff together with a welcome and orientation point for visitors. The building is located in a harsh marine environment and has utilised a combination of stone, timber and stainless steel detailing to provide a robust durable design. The building incorporates public toilets that are accessible after hours and a 24 hour visitor registration and information facility.

The building included a number of environmental strategies.
• Use of plantation grown timber
portal frame structure system
• Collection of all rainwater
• On site treatment of waste water
• Use of recycled masonry
• Natural ventilation with low level intact on south side and high level exhaust on north side
• Construction on previously disturbed site
• Retention of local indigenous
vegetation.
